Women's Equity .

Establishing “…equity means creating more than just a day to post hashtags or write thoughtful essays. It means creating a system that acknowledges unequal power and unfair privilege and takes real actions to fairly distribute power.”

As Lisa Chin, former CEO of Treehouse and United Way board member, noted, conversations regarding equity can’t be limited to one date on the calendar. Women continue to face inequities that undermine their power and reduce their opportunities.

If equity for women is going to happen, it is important to have these conversations consistently, in various environments, with other women and with allies, in order to move these concepts from words to behaviors and, ultimately, to permanent change.

Powerful Women are Scary: A new vision for women

Women have made incredible progress over the past 60 years since the women’s movement in the 1960s. In local and global politics, in all realms of business and production, and in entertainment, powerful women are changing the perspective and standards for women. So why is it that powerful women still make people uncomfortable? Considering the historical causes for female stereotypes, how cognitive dissonance plays a role in why powerful women are perceived as “scary”, and what cognitive behavioral strategies women can use to step into their power and change society’s perception of powerful women, will frame this discussion.

Bedroom to Boardroom: Creating equity in all areas of our lives

Women’s power is systematically and deliberately undermined. Whether through outdated societal norms, political agendas, or fear from other groups, women continue to fight for equality, equity, and basic human rights, in regard to pay, leadership, health services, and sexual wellness. As women learn to break through the “taboo” topics, control their own thoughts which undermine their power, and have open conversations about their wants and their needs, we create a ripple effect in all areas of our lives, professionally and personally. We connect to our power, own our lives, and demand what we want, without hesitation, embarrassment, or apology.

The United Nations has made gender equality a central focus of its Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 5, recognizing it as a fundamental human right.

While equality ensures that everyone receives the same resources and equal opportunities, equity acknowledges the structural barriers women face and tailors resources to meet those needs.

Civil society organizations and UN Women play a crucial role in promoting gender parity and helping prevent women from being left behind in leadership and decision-making positions.

Simply providing equal rights does not sufficiently dismantle gender inequality, as the global gender gap continues to affect access to education, pay, and leadership roles. Equal representation and equal pay remain key challenges in many sectors.

For example, women earn around 20 percent less than men worldwide, proving that gender discrimination still limits progress. True progress comes from ensuring fairness and impartiality, because gender equity is the pathway to achieve gender equality.

Through her keynote talks and workshops, Dr. Robin Buckley provides evidence-based strategies that help organizations understand the difference between equality and equity, ensuring that conversations turn into actionable change.

Despite progress since the creation of the UN Commission on the Status of Women within the organization’s first year, women still face systemic challenges. Women and girls represent half the world’s population and half of its potential, yet 54% of countries still lack laws in all key areas of gender equality.

reproductive health discussion and end child marriageThe UN Secretary-General has emphasized that achieving gender equality and empowering women and girls is the unfinished business of our time. To move forward, harmful practices that reinforce gender stereotypes and perpetuate violence against women must be eliminated.

Promoting women’s rights and creating environments that allow for women’s empowerment is not just a social goal; it is directly tied to economic growth. Studies show that empowering women boosts productivity, spurs innovation, and leads to greater development outcomes worldwide.

Dr. Robin’s coaching and speaking engagements equip leaders and teams with practical tools to address these barriers, creating inclusive environments that allow women to thrive in both personal and professional spaces.

Over the past decade, we’ve seen tremendous strides in women stepping into positions of influence, but real transformation requires consistent effort. One of the strongest solutions to closing the gender gap lies in promoting women’s leadership across every sector of society.

To truly promote gender equality in business, government, and education, representation is not enough; we need meaningful participation that changes systems, not just statistics. As she reminds organizations during my talks, women’s equal rights are non-negotiable, but the work doesn’t stop there.

end forced marriage and promote women equal rightsWe must also address barriers like gender bias, outdated structures, and harmful practices, including sexual violence, that continue to undermine progress.

Civil society plays a vital role in challenging norms, advocating for fairness, and creating space for women of every gender identity to lead authentically.

Events like International Women’s Day remind us of the importance of visibility and celebration, but the movement for change must happen every day.

When women lead, they don’t just break ceilings; they inspire others, influence policies, and create ripple effects of empowerment. Equality sets the rules, but equity ensures women have the tailored support, access to economic resources, and women equal rights needed to thrive.

Through her interactive workshops, she shows leaders how to dismantle bias, encourage diverse perspectives, and implement strategies that elevate women’s voices at every level.

By valuing and empowering women’s leadership, we take a decisive step toward achieving gender equality in all spheres of life.
